“When information supplied y a single news medium becomes a
universal source of news, the resulting political and cultural effects are
clear.” Pierre Bourdieu discusses in his essay that for example when all of
France gets their news from the nightly news on television rather then the
newspaper or any other forms then the results will be biased because everyone
is looking at the same thing, and making the same decisions. “People talk so
much about weather in day-to-day life because it’s a subject that cannot cause
any trouble.” In order for media to get more viewers or readers it needs to
have topics that won’t make people judge, or go against what it says, but
rather just be heard or read and supported.
In certain fields there are enemies made, and insults and
stereotypes are made about one another. This occurs because each one is trying
to get control of their industry. Today we are so competitive about everything.
The media is a huge part of our culture, so that is why this industry is so
competitive.
“The world of journalism itself is a field, but one that is
subject to great pressure from economic field via ratings.” Viewings are what
makes show continue on for multiple seasons, and what makes the networks money.
In terms of news on the television, some stories must be told, just to give an
edge over the competitor, and attract viewers. I liked reading this article
because I am very interested in being a news reporter on television and hearing
more about the ins and outs of news when it comes to what to say and the
competition, I find very interesting.
