Post Class- Herman and Chomsky 11/1/12

After the class on Wednesday, there was one main point that Evan pointed out and that being Disney buying Lucas films. This news is something that snowballs into the Herman and Chomsky piece as in turn continues to give Disney a commanding position in the world of fantasy movies after acquiring Lucasfilm from its founder, George Lucas, for $4.05 billion in stock and cash. We notice from the reading the small numbers of companies that dominate mass media and ultimately the world, in a sense. The reason why this is such a pivotal moment and why it relates to the Herman and Chomsky reading is due to the conformist behavior and constructed ideologies that are feared to happen after this. Through the piece we learn the ingredients of the propaganda model and Disney's power through size and wealth has made is possible for them to acquire and find a corporate home for the previous private company. One that that grew from Mr. Lucas’s hugely successful “Star Wars” movie series. Many fans are extremely lets down, because knowing the route Disney has taken is one that does not fit with the uniquely loved Lucasfilms. This example also fits in with the idea that we spoke about in class and that being when a more narrow amount of companies control mass media, propaganda and narrow ideologies are filtered and saturate the our media.
