I found that this class discussion really helped me to connect the readings from the previous week with today's reading for class. I think that since we are dealing with very abstract topics, it does get confusing at times to keep it all straight in our heads. We are basically trying to grasp "gaps" that are missing from thought and literature, but the whole reason they are called "gaps" is because they do not exist in the first place!
I really liked how Dr. C said that the whole purpose of talking/learning about theory is to set it and apply it to practice and real life situations. I liked the idea of thinking about it like architecture, especially how it makes us feel. When we saw the white, boxy building with a ton of standard window and no outside appeal, I immediately knew I wouldn't want to live there. It wasn't warm or inviting and also didn't seem like a comfortable place to live. So I imagined my house back home in NY and how that made me feel. It is warm red brick settled on an apple orchard with different sized windows (square/circle/bigger/smaller) with curtains and flowers near the front door. The contrasting image in my head between my home and the white building brought me back to the list of words, both modern and post-modern. The difference between purpose and play and design and chance.
Everything is a bit easier to see, for me, in my head when I put an image with what is abstract. I am a very visual learner, so I feel that this concept that we learned in class today will help me to better understand the theories of Saussure and Macherey and the many more we will need to decipher in the future.
I feel a lot better about reading theory and hopefully this gradual feeling of improvement will continue throughout the semester and beyond!
