Post Blog 9/5 - Melanie Roth
After our class discussion last Wednesday, I can confidently say that I understand the Saussure and Barthes readings. At first I had a harder time understanding their concepts about language and the importance of sounds linked to meanings, but now it is much clearer. The example of ghoti and fish really stuck out to me the most, and created much more of an understanding about how our english language is not always phonetic. In the past we have always been taught how to utilize language, but I have never explored it in this much depth. The two readings and in-class discussion, truly opened my eyes to the little elements that create communication from language and signs.
