From childhood, we learn that
language is a critical aspect of communication. We are taught that through
language, we are able to express our thoughts and ideas to others whether it is
through verbal or written communication.
Ferdinand de Saussure states that “Without language, thought is a vague,
uncharted nebula. There are no pre-existing ideas and nothing is distinct
before the appearance of language” (Saussure pg. 5). He then goes on to explain the importance of
signs and how they also play an important role in our understanding of the
messages around us. He explains that words can be enhanced by our contact with
others. He writes “The value of just any term is accordingly determined by its
environment”(Saussure pg. 8). He explains this idea by using the example of the sun and it is
important to consider it surroundings before giving a value to the word. This
can also be said for a sign. The value of any sign is determined by its
surroundings.
For example, take this Red Cross sign. It can be interpreted
through different words to different people all centering around the same
concept. Many people interpret is the sign for the American Red Cross
association. Others interpret it as first aid, ambulance or hospital. On the
battlefield, it was a signal of rescue and medical attention to soldiers. All
these terms center on medical attention and assistance. People look at it and
know they can be helped in some medical way. It was due to the constant medical
surroundings that helped us give a value to this sign.
