In the reading “The Emergent Rules”, Charles Jencks states
“From a pluralists society a new sensibility is formed which finds an
oversimple harmony either false or unchallenging. Instead, the juxtaposition of
tastes and world views is appreciated as being more real than the integrated
languages of both Exclusionist Classicism and High Modernism” (p. 282). Today,
many people in our society have begun to embrace individual interests and
creativity. It has become appealing to step out of the social norms and establishes
ones uniqueness and independence. One example that came to mind when I was
reading this was Lady Gaga. She is known for her erratic, flamboyant and
diverse style in both music and fashion. She stands out among the crowd and
inspires her fans to do the same. We have seen this idea not just through music
and fashion but through other outlets such as literature, visual mediums and
architecture. This also reminds me of the discussion of the Fallingwater Home
created by Frank Lloyd. The house was interesting because it was noticeably
different from most buildings that we see today. For me, I thought the house
looked very interesting but not necessarily for me to live in. When I saw it, I
thought that it looked like a nice vacation home but I couldn’t picture staying
in it for a long period of time. I prefer houses that give off a more homely,
stable feeling but I appreciated its uniqueness.
I found
the overall reading to be interesting but a bit hard to understand. I am hoping
that our in-class discussion will bring more clarity to some of the key
concepts. During my own research of the author and the text, I found a website
that shows Post-Modernists architecture that I thought was interesting to
share. http://colorineverydaylife.wordpress.com/2010/07/19/postmodernism/
