Post Class Blog Adrianne

The readings make complete sense to me now! I was a little worried before coming to class because I had trouble fully understanding both readings. Part of what was confusing was the repetition of the same idea, just stated in various different ways. The discussion and examples in class really clarified everything.

Throughout class I was constantly making connections to real world situations and other media texts.  For example, in Barthes we were discussing how it is more intriguing as a reader to be actively thinking in a text than to just have everything revealed to you, in relation to when he says "Is not the most erotic portion of the body where the garment gapes?" (108) My mind instantly went to Christopher Nolan's films, Momento in particular. If you have not seen this film, you really should because it is truly brilliant. When I first watched this film, it stirred a feeling of uneasiness in me mainly because the scenes are not in chronological order. It reminded me of Barthes because there are so many gaps that the audience wants to actively think during the entire film in order to understand what is happening.

Majority of films in theaters, the audience is given the plot and it is easy to follow. There is no active thinking, there is no challenge, there is no place where the garment gapes.
