Post Class Blog 9/17 Courtney Sparling

Today, I really liked how we partnered off and exchanged thoughts with our neighbors. I felt like talking about it with a partner helped me to collect my thoughts and share my ideas with her and build off of the ideas she brought up. I felt more confident about the reading, which I was a little unsure about, when I was able to talk with a partner and then talk about it further as a whole class.

I also really liked how we used the word "GRAPE" as an example about authenticity and originality. Grape can be the grape, as in the literal grape that grows on a vine but also the grape flavor, like in different sodas and kool aid that has been reproduced to taste like grape. In some cases, people may even grow to like the reproduced flavor or grape better than the original grape. I really got the connection between this example and the theory that Benjamin presents in the reading.

The slideshow was also really helpful for me, in terms of better understanding the reading. The quote that sticks out most for me is:

"The camera need not respect the performance as an integral whole."

It really clicked for me in my head when we went over this quote. The camera/cameraman controls what the audience at home sees and for how long. It is so radically different from a stage performance, where the audience can interact and scan the stage at the same time and with their own eyes, not through the eyes of the camera lens, projecting moving images on a screen that is not similar to a stage.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading Benjamin! I felt that I understand his theory much better now and I can't wait to keep reading more theorists and hopefully discover that I can understand what they have written much like Benjamin.
