After this week’s reading I was able to grasp some concepts
but I have to say I am definitely looking forward to a discussion about them, I
hope to understand what is meant by “Postmodernity definitely presents itself
as Antimodernist. But I understand the different historical definitions of
modernity, from the reading I gather modernity makes an abstract opposition
between tradition and present. This is why Modern Family (the show on ABC) has
its name. The show is based around 3 families, one family is comprised of 2 gay
men and an adopted child, another older Caucasian man with a young Latino wife
and her child and a traditional family (middle class husband, wife and 3 kids).
The show plays with the aspirant traditional family style and I feel is a
critique on the American household. This is why the title Modern Family makes
sense. I would also like to apply the term
used in the readings, ‘Avant-garde’ to my analogy. From what I gather from the
internet avant-garde are people, techniques, or works that are described as pioneering
and experimental, usually in respect to the arts. I would have to say a show
about a “modern” family; a family that is not traditionally seen but is very
common in America is a very avant-garde show to make. A couple quotes I liked were “Modernity
revolts against the normalizing functions of tradition; modernity lives on the
experience of rebelling against all that is normative.” I am going to need help
understanding the team Jeztzeit. I searched for a while on the internet and got
different terms like; here-and-now, now-time, everlasting now. All of these
terms were kind of confusing but that’s what’s class on Monday is for.
