After
class this week I left thinking more about the relationships created by signs.
To quote Ace of Base “I saw the sign, it opened up my eyes I saw the signs.” There
were a couple examples I saw in class on Wednesday that really brought home the
idea of how important signs are but also their inconspicuous reoccurrence in my
life, whether it be actual words that are signs are objects that are signs. For
example a simple rose can carry a lot of different signs above its petals, for
each different color of the rose a different thing is signified. While the yellow
rose will signify friendship and freedom the red rose signifies romance and elegance,
pink signifies gratitude and white will signify purity and innocence. (That rhymes)
Ok most of these signs for the rose are not that well known but the fact the
everyone knows the “Red Rose” will signify love while a red rose is just a
flower is a pretty interesting thing.
I also enjoyed learning about language,
the Ghoti = Fish thing is still cool to me I did some additional research and
saw that In the
book Finnegan’s Wake, by James Joyce, the author writes "Gee each owe tea
eye smells fish” I thought that was another cool way of presenting “Ghoti” Also If any of you are familiar with the
Television show, How I Met Your Mother then when the topic of Tmesis arrived in
class it was instantly met with the very quotable fictional character Barney
Stinson. I would say one of his notable catch phrases is “This will be Legen-
wait for it- Dary”. (Barney Stinson) Class on Wednesday
made the readings a lot easier to understand. Comprehending Barthes’s work sometimes
takes a couple read throughs but luckily this past class helped with the
overall grasp of the readings from last week.
