Post-Blog 9/12 - Melanie Roth

Each of the examples of postmodern architecture that we viewed, and discussed in class, were extremely unique. It was fascinating to see how every one of these buildings related back to Charles Jencks and what was stated in The Emergent Rules. Our class discussion this morning made it clear to me how, specifically, intertextuality is very prominent for postmodern architecture. Relating back to my pre-class entry, I find it eye opening because with all of my newly gained knowledge from today’s class, I can truly see how other elements of post modernity correlates with the architecture that defines the town of Celebration. More specifically, how this architecture borrows little things from other building styles and intermixes them, creating these unique structures. Another specific example that was discussed in class was the connection between urbane urbanism, and Baldwin Park. This idea of building something that blends all together, and appearing as if it has been there for a while, is a perfect example of the architecture that defines Baldwin Park.
I enjoyed listening to my peers’ interpretations of certain buildings, and found it most interesting when we tried to interpret what was being signified, or portrayed. For me, the most intriguing photo that was presented to us in class, was of the apartments that looked like a design for Lego land. I would have never in a million years have guessed that it was an apartment building that people actually resided in. The structure of the building demonstrates a complete 180 from the norms of architecture, that as a society, we are accustomed to. I am looking forward to going more in depth about the influences of postmodernism and how it has shifted/ is shifting our culture. I feel like I am finally grasping a significantly better understanding, of postmodernism vs. modernism.
