This is my first post, but not a very official one. as i was reading about Semiology, which is the study of signs we realize that signs are every where both literally and figuratively. When learning about signs I feel as though we must begin the class/discussion with Ace of Base's "The Sign" or with Elmo and not angry Chris Brown's "See The Signs"
Although these two videos are random, they serve as a contrast of the literal and figurative versions of signs. When you add the messages of the songs together you get the message that "Signs are everywhere and will open your eyes when you see them.
I would also like to ponit out when Voloshinov says "Signs can only arise on inter-individual territory' and therefore the sign is always ideological." This means that we have to personally interpret signs, this is why some things that seem obvious may not be seen by all like for example why is this a bad sign
This may be because the sign says the word "bad" but it can also mean the sign is poorly made, or the sign is in a "bad" spot, its this inter-individual territory that messages are recieved or misread. When we use words they are signs that are distiguished by there enviroment. For example when the author discussed the words sheep vs mouton. Both of these things are the same thing but in english we wouldnt say we are eating sheep instead we would call it mutton this is because sheep has and additional term surrounding it as mouton does not. because ideas are coupled together with sound and ideas are shaped by communities which is shaped by its surroundings, im not sure if i can agree with the stick figure about the sign because im not sure of its surroundings.
