"In such a world, fan works can no longer be understood as simply derivative of mainstream materials but must be understood as themselves open to appropriation and reworking by the media industries."
What I took from this reading and the class discussion we had was that the creative interpretation of a work is not only in the hands of the big Hollywood production companies anymore. People can use what the mainstream media gives them and take it too a personal level, especially amateur filmmakers who now have the resources and technology to make their own versions of the films, using costumes, action figures, and even computer graphics to recreate scenes in ways that the original film could not.
I also believe that Star Wars is so widely known throughout the world that it can be incorporated and used with many other different aspects that are easily recognizable. For example, the date May 4th is known as Star Wars Day because people say "May the Fourth be with you," playing on the film's phrase, "May the Force be with you." Because of this recognizable quality that it has, Star Wars is the perfect film to be parodied.
Disney has also taken interest in Star Wars, which is huge because Disney is also one of those household names that is known around the world. The collaboration with Disney can be seen in Disney World's attraction Star Tours and the abundance of gift shop toys, shirts, pins, hats, etc that they have with both Disney characters and Star Wars characters/themes,
