After our class discussion about Jenkins, the idea of fan culture is much more apparent. "Fans envision a world where all of us can participate in the creation and circulation of central cultural myths" (Pg. 458). The idea of fan culture is that an intersection is created between the media and the participatory culture. In his essay, Jenkins uses the example of Star Wars and the excessive fan culture that has surrounded the movie. One of the first things I thought of was how the general public strives off of fan culture. We support professional sports teams, follow certain bands, and inquire about specific celebrities. As a genreal public we actively participate in fan culture on an everyday basis. One example that I specifically applied Jenkins theory to was Fantasy Football. As football fans, we participate in a fantasy where we pick our own teams, control our players and participate actively to control the outcomes. Because we are so consumed with the real, we indulge in the fantasy to satisfy and extend our likes of the real.
