Pre-Blog Eco
Anita wrote, "the fact that Vegas is a city that was created and placed in the middle of nowhere Nevada with the intent of a large consumer driving force. Eco states that 'the consumer finds himself participating in the fantasy because of his own authenticity as a consumer..he is the role of the cowboy or gold prospector who comes in town to be fleeced of all he has accumulated while out in the wilds.' " This is the first example that came to mind when I began to read this article because the intensity around Vegas and it's mantra "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas". It's this fantasy land for adults where people can come escape reality and no one will ever find out what you did. Yet, in order to attend this fantasy people must behave like its robots, just as Eco later discusses in the article. Only in this land of regulation you must let go of all inhibitions and follow the life of gambling and alcohol. Going off of Anita, Vegas is just a Disneyland for the world of adults where the "total fake" is admitted but furthered to seem totally real through the seclusion of hotels, bars, numerous people, and everything else uncensored within a small bubble. Once you're inside nothing leads you to believe another world exists outside, which in the case of Las Vegas is easily achieved due to the remote location of this attraction land. Is this something that should be rejected or accepted? It goes back to the fact that we like to believe in fantasy. Escaping reality is welcomed in most any form, whether we escape it through watching a film (mechanical reproduction), or in this case escape it to the extent of visiting Disneyland, it's all a time for people to leave worries behind.
