pre class 10/17

“The class which has the means of material production at its disposal, consequently also controls the means of mental production, so that the ideas of those who lack the means of mental production are on the whole subject to it.” The idea of using ideas to create power is a strong element in this reading. Marx and Engels talk about how labor forces, and its separation seen between classes is one of the main divisions in mental and material labor. One group can then be seen as the thinkers, while the others are seen as the much more passive thinkers. The two parts then remain divided and hostility is created. They also say how without taking a look at the ideas from the oppositions side then we are not able to get the full effect and see what all is really existing. Also they say that the more abstract an idea is the more likely we are to give it power. This does seem true to me because I feel like we think so much deeper when statements are said that are much deeper in though, and not quite as straight forward. This is why I think a lot of the theorist’s work we have read this year does in fact seem so powerful. This is what I interpreted from this reading but it does make me every confused still if I am grasping the concepts, especially since the reading was so short.
