"Those who are in ideology believe themselves by definition outside ideology." (48) One of the ISA's that Althusser mentioned was education, and we as students are representative of this ideology. The ideology that we follow is that of an educational one in which we are all students. We subscribe to this ideology, yet when people would ask us what we "are" we could respond with a myriad of different ideologies. We could respond by saying Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Caucasian, African American, etc. The list is limitless, and Althusser was trying to say that though people subscribe to a certain ideology, they are not bound by it, moreover often times we distance ourselves from a certain ideology for various reasons. This idea is placed in contrast by another one of Althusser's statements when he said, "There is no practice except by and in an ideology." (45) Everything and everyone is involved in an ideology, yet those that are involved are also distanced by the presence of multiple ideologies in every facet of life.
