post class 10/22

"Subcultures represent 'noise' (as opposed to sound): interference in the orderly sequence..."
I liked our discussion in class about this quote with the example of Hot Topic. This store is meant to be a goth type store that is very dark and intimidating almost from the outside. The clothes and merchandise sold in the store are meant to make you different, yet the clothes usually deal with some sort of fan culture. Also the store is a chain and all the products are mass produced, so the idea of being an individual is definitely not seen here, when that is what they are going for when marketing. This idea of 'noise' is more so an opposition or interference. Examples can be found anywhere, such a hipsters, CMC students, Justin Bieber fans, greek life students, and so on. An example is this photo of twilight crazy fans who are a subculture, by liking the same thing.

"The author and the reader...both live 'naturally' in ideology." This quote also by Hebdige is about how everything in our world can be read and should be read. Not only that though but we have the ability to actually understand what we read as well. This puts the reader and the author on the same level which is what makes it interesting to think about.
